PORTLAND — A 17-month-old Auburn boy battling hemolytic uremic syndrome remained in stable condition Wednesday night at Maine Medical Center.
Myles Herschaft is fighting the same infection that claimed the life of a Poland boy earlier this week, according to the child’s family.
Early Wednesday night, the toddler’s father, Victor Herschaft, posted an update on Facebook in response to inquiries.
“I’m getting a lot of questions regarding Myles’ current state and condition,” Victor posted at about 6:40 p.m. “Currently, he is in the pediatric intensive care unit and stable. We are taking it day by day, though his days are long he continues to be the little fighter he always was.”
Myles’ daily treatment consists of dialysis, blood transfusions and critical supportive care, according to his family.
Both Myles and 20-month-old Colton Guay, who died Monday, had visited a petting zoo at the Oxford County Fair in Oxford in September, although health officials have not yet linked the sickness to the fair.
The families of both Guay and Herschaft have set up GoFundMe pages to help with medical costs.
“Myles has the best team possible working for him and I just want to thank those at Maine Med who continually care and help Myles on his road to being a healthy baby,” Victor wrote on Wednesday. “I can’t thank everyone enough for the continued support for our family and our little boy.”
