DIXFIELD — Police are continuing to investigate the cause of a head-on collision Saturday afternoon that killed a Winslow man and critically injured his wife, Lt. Benjamin Gaudet of the Dixfield Police Department said.

Gaudet said officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident at about 4:30 p.m. on Route 2 in the area of the Maine Department of Transportation building.

Dixfield police said a Toyota sedan driven east by Paul Stucki, 86, of Winslow crossed the centerline, grazed a westbound 2016 Ford F-250 operated by Brad St. Pierre of Topsham and collided head-on with a 2005 Chrysler van driven by June Lauter, 54, of Wisconsin.

Lauter was traveling behind St. Pierre.

Gaudet said St. Pierre told police he pulled to the side of the road to avoid a major collision.

Stucki and Lauter were extricated from their vehicles using the Jaws of Life.

Paul Stucki was taken to Rumford Hospital and passed way on arrival, police said. His wife, Joyce, was taken  to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where she remains in critical condition with unknown injuries.

Lauter was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with multiple fractures, while her sister, Judith Lohr, 48, who was in the passenger seat, was taken to Rumford Hospital for a broken bone, according to police.

Gaudet said the crash is being reconstructed by the Dixfield Police Department and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office. The reason Stucki’s car crossed the centerline has not been determined.

Other agencies responding to the accident included Dixfield and Rumford fire departments, Med-Care Ambulance, NorthStar Ambulance, Wilton Police Department and the Maine State Police.
