In the Sun Journal Oct. 13 there was a story that U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin has raised nearly $1.6 million for his 2016 re-election bid. I am sure most people would agree that this amount is small in comparison to the amount being raised by most senators, not to mention the campaigns for president.
With so much poverty in this country, and the needs of the elderly and mentally ill, does that level of spending make sense to anyone out there? Shouldn’t Americans be demanding a cap of such expenditures on elections?
If such massive amounts of money can be raised to promote (or should I say buy votes) for a favored candidate by individuals and corporations, why can’t Americans raise or donate funds to build mental health facilities, elderly housing, or nursing homes where an individual can have a private room to maintain their dignity and be cared for with ample staff to dress, bathe and care for them in the way they deserve after working and paying taxes all of their lives?
This country needs to turn things around and take a hard look at the waste of money in the election process, the enormous salaries paid to athletes, and money sent to help other countries when we really cannot even take care of our own people adequately.
God help us and our country.
