PHILLIPS — The fifth Annual Gordon Davenport, Sr. Memorial Golf Challenge was held recently at Justafield in September. The annual event is organized by Winona Davenport in memory of her husband. Proceeds from the challenge benefit the Phillips Area Community Center (PACC).
Nineteen players accepted the challenge and competed in five different events including: Over the Wall, Accuracy, Longest Drive with Putter, Closest to Pin, and Break the “Glass”. Golfers paid $5 for10 balls to use at any or all of the challenges. This year’s winners were Dan Richardson, Over the Wall; Pete White, Accuracy; John McKinney, Longest Drive and Break the “Glass”; and David Anderson, Closest to Pin. Each winner won a $50 cash prize. Prizes were donated by Osgood Flooring, Phillips Farmers’ Market, Cecil Phillips Construction, Pleasant Street Popovers and Pies, and Duane Stefani.
Davenport had been trying to find a way to raise money for PACC for some time when she came up with the golf challenge five years ago. The event also serves to commemorate her husband, Gordon Davenport, Sr., a well-known local “character” who, like Winona, was involved in the Phillips community. At least one other member of the Davenport family besides Nona attends the challenge each year. This year, Gordie Davenport III, of Madbury, N.H., was present, testing his skills along with the other contestants.
