PORTLAND — A Maine-based tidal power company is bolstering its presence in Canada with a subsidiary in Quebec.

Ocean Renewable Power Company President and CEO Chris Sauer says the new effort underscores the company’s commitment to “making marine renewable projects a reality for the province.”

Ocean Renewable is running demonstration projects in Down East Maine and in Alaska, and it’s also worked in the past with Nova Scotia. Earlier this year, it announced it was establishing an office in Ireland.

The company is currently refining a larger tidal energy unit based on one that became the first to connect to the utility grid in the U.S. It also developing a smaller unit, dubbed “RivGen,” for use in rivers.
