CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The defending NCAA champion Bates College women’s rowing team didn’t repeat as Women’s Collegiate Eights champions on Sunday at the 51st Head of the Charles, but the Bobcats still performed like the No. 1 team in Division III.

Bates’ first varsity eight placed third overall and Bates’ second varsity eight took sixth place out of 32 boats, well ahead of many rivals’ first eights.

Bowdoin, 1, UMF 0

FARMINGTON —Bowdoin College (7-4-1) held onto a 1-0 non-conference win over the University of Maine at Farmington (5-9-1) women’s soccer team behind Maggie Godley’s eventual game-winning goal at Leib Field on Sunday

Godley tallied the only goal of the contest in the 18th minute. The Polar Bears were on the attack as Brigit Bergin lined a shot on goal but UMF goalie Kiana Thompson (Mt. Blue) was able to deflect it away. As the Beavers tried to clear it, Godley was able to come away with the ball and booted in her first goal of the contest.

UMF’s best scoring chance came before Godley’s goal in the 10th minute. The Beavers forced a turnover, which led to Lydia Roy having a breakaway opportunity, but the freshman got just behind her shot attempt enough so it sailed high over the crossbar.

Men’s soccer

Amherst 3, Bates 0

LEWISTON — Amherst’s Nico Pascual-Leone scored all three of his team’s goals on Sunday in a 3-0 loss for the Bates men’s soccer team.

The Bobcats (7-4-1, 2-4-1) didn’t match up well against the bigger and faster second-ranked and undefeated Lord Leffs (12-0-0, 7-0-0).

Pascual-Leone scored his first goal when another shot deflected off the gloves of Bates keeper Sam Polito. The ball found the foot of Pascual-Leone and he drilled it into the back of the net in the 22nd minute to give Amherst a 1-0 lead.

Playing without leading scorer Peabo Knoth, Bates struggled offensively, tallying eight shots but only three shots on goal.
