While a repeat victory wasn’t in the cards for the Bates College women’s rowing team at the Head of the Charles Regatta this past Sunday, the Bobcats’ first varsity eight boat did cross the finish line in third place in the Women’s Collegiate Eight race in Cambridge, Mass.
Bates’ first boat finished behind perennial top finisher Williams and Division-II Mercyhurst, traversing the 4,800-meter course in 17:36.058. Williams covered the course in 17:25.577.
The defending national champion Bobcats’ first boat consisted of bow Laura Rand and stroke Lena Rintell, as well as Emma Conover, Emma Taylor, Rosemary Kyne, Olivia Stockly and Emilie Muller. Katherine Traquina was the coxswain.
Bates also placed a second boat in the top six of the 32-boat race. The Bobcats’ second boat finished in 17:59.858 to place behind fourth-place Wellesley and fifth-place Ithaca.
The Bobcats also put two boats into the Men’s Collegiate Eight race, placing 19th and 36th in the 41-boat race, which was won by Hobart College.
Both the women’s and men’s teams will be back in action Saturday for the CBB Chase in Sydney.
Men’s soccer
The Bates men’s soccer team has cooled off after a fast start to the season, when the Bobcats won their first four games. Bates is 7-4-2 heading into its final two regular-season games Saturday and next Wednesday, but the Bobcats are just 2-4-2 in NESCAC play.
The Bobcats have a win, a draw and a loss in their past three games – all conference games – and finish off at home against Middlebury and on the road at Colby.
The Bates attack has been paced by Luis Pereira and Peabo Knoth, with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Sam Polito has a 1.12 goals-against average in 13 games in net.
Women’s Soccer
Like the men’s soccer team, the Bates women have each of a win, loss and draw in their last three games. And the women also got off to a good start, going 3-0-1 in their first four games.
The Bobcats are 5-5-3 (2-3-3 in NESCAC play) and finish with a pair of home games.
Olivia Amdur (13 points) and Leah Humes (10) lead the team in scoring.
Field Hockey
The Bobcats played their first 12 games even, going 6-6. The team has three games remaining, including a non-conference game Thursday against Southern Maine.
Bates is 2-6 in conference play, and still must face Middlebury (at home) and Colby (in Waterville).
Shannon Beaton leads the Bobcats in goals, with seven.
Cross Country
The Bates cross country teams are preparing for next weekend’s NESCAC Championships, as the teams get a week off from competition this weekend.
The men are coming off a win in the Maine State Championships last weekend, while the women finished third out of 11 teams.
In the men’s race, Allen Sumrall finished second overall as the fastest Bobcat. Bates placed five runners in the top seven to easily beat second-place Colby.
Isabelle Unger was the top Bobcat finisher in the women’s race, taking sixth overall. Colby won the team race, and Bowdoin and Bates tied for second in points, but the Polar Bears won the tie-breaker with a better finish for its sixth-fastest runner.
Volleyball
Bates found itself 7-11 through its first 18 matches, and was 3-6 in NESCAC play, with six matches left.
The remaining schedule features just one more conference match – a home date against Bowdoin next Saturday.
Chandler McGrath leads the team with 228 kills, while Augy Silver and Laryssa Schepel top the Bobcats in digs, with 254 and 253, respectively.
Golf
The Bates women’s fall season has come to end, finishing with a 13th place showing at the Williams Fall Classic, while the men prepare for the fall season-ending NEIGA Championships Sunday and Monday.
Both teams have won matches this season, with the women beating Bowdoin in a season-opening dual match at Martindale Country Club as well as tri-match win over Bowdoin and Husson. The Men won the CBB Championship at Martindale two weeks ago.
Tennis
Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams have completed their fall schedules.
On the men’s side, Ben Rosen starred for the Bobcats, making it to the semifinals of the Bates-hosted Wallach Invitational as well as a quarterfinal appearance at the ITA Regional Championships.
First-year player Bella Stone has shined for the women’s team, earning points in all three of the competitions the Bobcats have entered.
