AUGUSTA (AP) — The Maine AFL-CIO has elected its first woman to lead the labor organization.
Cynthia Phinney of Livermore Falls was elected president at the Maine AFL-CIO 30th Biennial Convention Friday in Bangor.
Although she’s the first woman elected to the position, she is not the first to serve in the position. Gwen Gatcomb served as the Maine AFL-CIO’s interim president after Charles O’Leary stepped down in 1999.
The Maine AFL-CIO is the state’s largest labor federation made up of 160 local unions representing over 40,000 workers from across the state, including nurses, fire fighters, ship builders, paper mill workers, letter carriers, plow truck drivers and public employees.
