LEEDS — Errol “Abe” and Kathy Additon of Leeds celebrated 50 years of marriage at a party hosted by their three daughters at The Great Outdoors in Turner on Sept. 13. There were approximately 100 friends and family members in attendance, including Mr. Additon’s 99-year-old mother, Marion Additon. Nephew Brent Hadley said the grace before enjoying some light refreshments.

The couple was married on Sept. 11, 1965, at the Buckfield Community Church in Buckfield. The couple met at the Chick-a-Dee Restaurant in Turner while Mrs. Additon was employed there as a waitress. They were introduced by a mutual friend, Meredith Bigg, who set them up on their first date. The two have resided in Leeds since their wedding where Mr. Additon ran the family dairy farm until 2002 with the help of Mrs. Additon, who tended the gardens, raised the chickens and managed the home.

Together, they raised three daughters, Darlene Tabor, Jill Freda and Lorri Hoffay, who all live on the family land. Earlier this year, Mr. Additon was recognized for his years of service as selectman for the town of Leeds. He has also served on the School Committee for MSAD 52, has been an auctioneer since 1983 and has volunteered his and his wife’s time for the Leavitt senior class auction, as well as the Leeds Elementary School harvest auction. During the past five years, he has also served on the board for the Maine Municipal Association. He was the chairman for the Maine Harness Race Commission and currently serves on the Pulling Commission for the state of Maine.

Mrs. Additon has dedicated many years to servicing the community of Leeds through the Presbyterian Church as a deacon, elder, choir member and member and chair of the Women’s Association. She has baked countless number of pies, stuffing, turkeys, etc., for church suppers, funerals and caterings. She has a passion for cooking which she is willing to share with anyone interested in learning or tasting.

Family has been the cornerstone of their marriage for the past 50 years with their faith in God being their foundation. They have been members of East Auburn Baptist Church since 2010. Their family homestead has been the gathering place for holidays, weddings, birthday parties, girls’ days and reunions. They have been blessed with nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
