FARMINGTON — Senior forward Rebecca Young scored the decisive goal as the University of Maine at Farmington dispatched Thomas College 2-1 in a NAC field hockey semifinal Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers (8-9) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Emily Leighton scored only two minutes into the contest.
Leighton’s goal stood until the Beavers (10-4) got on the scoreboard in the 58th minute. Farmington took advantage of a penalty corner when LeeAnn Greenleaf passed to Lindsey Whitney of Lisbon at the top of the circle.
Whitney drove forward and passed off to Andrea Stemm, who dribbled in for the score.
Bowdoin 4, Bates 1
BRUNSWICK — Kimmy Gagnon and Rachel Kennedy scored goals just 24 seconds apart in the 16th minute to put Bowdion up by two en route to a 4-1 victory over Bates in NESCAC quarterfinals field hockey action Saturday afternoon.
In the 13th minute and down by one, first-year player Jessie Moriarty scored her second goal of the season for the Bobcats to even the contest at one.
Following Kennedy’s second goal of the contest for the Polar Bears, neither team did much offensively until the 66th minute when Bowdoin tallied an insurance goal.
Women’s Soccer
Trinity 2, Bates 1
HARTFORD, Conn. — First-year forward Taylor Kirchgessner scored the game-winning goal in the 35th minute to lead Trinity College to a 2-1 victory over Bates college in the NESCAC women’s soccer quarterfinals Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats got on the board first as first-year Sarah Gutch scored the first goal of her career. In the seventh minute of action, she found the back of the net unassisted from a distance.
But, the Bantams responded only a few minutes later. In the 14th minute, an impressive set of passes from Kirchgessner and Laura Nee set up Caroline McKenna, who blasted a shot into the net to even the match at one.
NEC 5, UMF 1
HENNIKER, N.H. — Jaycie Triandafilou tallied five goals as New England College knocked the University of Maine at Farmington out of the North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal tournament, 5-1, in women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
Triandafilou tallied her first of five goals in the 17th minute. Bridget Humphrey answered with the equalizer less than 45 seconds later, but the Beavers (7-10-1) could not generate enough momentum to stop Triandafilou and the Pilgrims’ offense.
Kiana Thompson of Industry saved five shots for the Beavers.
Men’s cross country
Hollis is at NAC Championship
BANGOR — University of Maine at Farmington men’s cross country sophomore Robert Hollis of Auburn raced his way to the top spot at the 2015 North Atlantic Conference Championship Saturday afternoon at Husson College
Hollis topped the competition by 25 seconds as he finished with an overall time of 27:01.05.
The Beavers claimed third on the team leader board at the 8K championship race with 84 points. Lyndon won the conference title with 46 points, while Colby-Sawyer ranked ahead of Farmington in second with 78 points.
UMF will compete in the NCAA Regional Championship on Saturday, Nov. 14 at Connecticut College.
Bates Places 5th at NESCAC
MIDDLETOWN — The Bates women’s cross country team turned in its best race of the season on Saturday, taking fifth place among 11 teams at the NESCAC Championships.
Bates scored 139 points, solidly in fifth place. Junior Jessica Wilson, senior Isabelle Unger and sophomore Katherine Cook all turned in top-25 finished out of 123 runners to pace the Bobcats.
Bates, currently the 10th-ranked team in New England, competes at the ECAC Championships next Saturday in Williamstown, Mass.
