JAY — A Wilton woman and her grandson were injured late Tuesday when the car they were riding in went off Route 4 and struck a large pine tree in North Jay, police Chief Richard Caton IV said.
Jay firefighters had to extricate the driver, Evangeline Phillips, 57, from the vehicle, he said.
Firefighters set up a landing zone for LifeFlight in the parking lot of Ranor Mechanical, so she could be flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. She was listed in fair condition Wednesday, a CMMC spokesman said.
Phillips’ grandson, Trevon Goodwin, 15, also of Wilton, was also injured and initially taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington by a NorthStar EMS ambulance, Caton said.
Goodwin was later transported by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, a FMH spokeswoman said Wednesday. He was not at FMH or CMMC on Wednesday afternoon. Maine Medical Center in Portland had no information about him.
It is believed Phillips fell asleep while driving, Caton said.
He described Phillips’ injuries as serious but not life-threatening. He said he did not know the extent of injuries to her grandson.
The accident was reported at 9:51 p.m. It occurred near Greenridge Way, which is between Howie’s Welding & Fabrication and the Department of Transportation lot.
Officer Dylan Rider was assisted at the scene by Caton.
