SABATTUS — Fire damaged the rear portion of a home at 374 Middle Road on Saturday night.
Firefighters quickly knocked down flames in the back third of the home around 8 p.m..
The call came in as a chimney fire, Chief Marc Veilleux said.
“The roof (in the back third) was fully involved when we arrived on scene,” he said.
The rest of the house sustained smoke damage, he said.
The owners were home at the time, but were alerted by smoke detectors and escaped safely. No injuries were reported, Veilleux said.
Investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal were alerted and were expected to help determine the cause and area of origin of the blaze.
Firetrucks were filled with water a couple of miles down the road and hoses pumped from a portable pool set up on Middle Road.
Five tankers were on scene and shuttled water with the portable tank, Veilleux said.
Fire crews from Lisbon, Litchfield and Wales assisted.
