When violence rocked central Paris on Friday, a pair of newlyweds from Poland was there to witness the madness.

Aimee Arsenault Labbe, a manager at the Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Lewiston, and her husband, Chris Labbe, were in Paris on their honeymoon.

By early Friday night, the couple was hunkered down and waiting to hear more about what was happening outside.

“We don’t know much more than anyone else right now,” Aimee said at about 5:15 p.m. local time, “and are watching via BBC live, though we have heard a steady stream of sirens for about 30 minutes.”

The shootings were said to have left nearly 150 people dead and others wounded, French television reported. An explosion near the country’s main sports stadium forced a hasty evacuation and concert-goers were held hostage at an arena.

Aimee described the scene:

“Thankfully we learned of the incident from our hotel in the 5th arrondissement (about three arrondissements away from the 10th and 11th where the attacks took place), though we were out walking home from dinner at the time of the attacks,” she wrote. “We’ve been listening to a steady stream of sirens for about 45 minutes. We are relieved to have not been in the area however are still quite nervous to be in the city as this unfolds, not knowing if the parties responsible have been killed or apprehended, or are still on the streets.

“We are supposed to be here until Thursday,” Labbe wrote, “right now not sure what’s going to happen.”
