LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen appointed Amanda Allen of Livermore Falls town clerk Tuesday, Town Manager Kristal Flagg said on Friday. Sue Sapiel of Jay resigned as town clerk/treasurer on Monday.
Sapiel had worked for the town since 2006. She served as sewer clerk prior to becoming town clerk/treasurer on July 1, 2011.
The board also voted to appoint Flagg as acting treasurer, Flagg said. She held the town clerk/treasurer position for more than 20 years before she became interim town manager in late 2010 and town manager on July 1, 2011.
Selectmen separated the town clerk and treasurer positions, hoping to eventually make the treasurer position part time with no benefits in order to save money, Flagg said.
Allen has worked for the town for 14 years, first as an emergency dispatcher, and later as administrative assistant for the Police Department and sewer clerk. She also held the titles of deputy town clerk and General Assistance administrator. Allen still currently works eight hours a week as administrative assistant for police Chief Ernest Steward Jr.
Residents voted in June 2011 to change the elected treasurer/town clerk position to one that would be hired and appointed.
