RUMFORD — A fire that destroyed the two-story home of Myles Roberts on Route 232 on Tuesday did so much damage that the cause will probably be undetermined, Fire Chief Bob Chase said Wednesday night.

“The fire marshal was up to investigate last night while we were on scene,” Chase said. “He took some pictures and did some interviews, but based on the amount of damage, there wasn’t a lot of physical evidence. He doesn’t believe it’s suspicious and it will probably remain undetermined.”

“Based on the amount of damage, we can’t pinpoint the origin,” he said.

“It’s a total loss we were able to save the garage,” Chase said. “The last I knew, there was a dog and a cat unaccounted for, but one dog had been found.”

Fire departments from Rumford, Mexico, Woodstock, Greenwood, Dixfield, Peru and Andover responded to the blaze, which was first reported by a passer-by at 1:26 p.m., according to Rumford Police Sgt. Tracey Higley.
