LEWISTON — It appears Mainers are quite pleased with their senior U.S. senator.
A new survey by Morning Consult that looked at 75,000 voters nationwide shows Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, has the second highest approval rating in the Senate, second only to Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vermont, according to a news release issued by Collins’ office Tuesday.
Sanders is also a leading Democratic candidate for president.
The survey conducted state-by-state between May and November asked registered voters whether they approve or disapprove of the job their senators are doing.
Voters were determined by zip code and each state’s sample was weighted based on gender, age and race using data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Maine’s junior U.S. senator, Angus King, an independent and former two-term governor, was ranked the ninth most popular U.S. senator with an approval rating of 65 percent.
At the bottom of the list with approval ratings of 37 percent were Sens. Gary Peters, D-Mich., and Bob Menendez, D-N.J.
