Three skating rinks for the public in Lewiston will be provided by the city, Mayor Brann announced Thursday. Accompanied by Alderman Wilson. J. B. Longley, superintendent of water works and Street Commissioner Roy, the mayor made a tour of the city to select the most available points. Thru the influence of Alderman Wilson, W. J. Mahaney will grant the use of the land at Russell and Main streets, Lewiston, for a rink. This is an ideal location, convenient to cars and naturally formed to make a rink at a slight expense.

Although he may one day find himself framed in the anxious sights of some eager hunter’s rifle; a year-old spikehorn deer right now owes his life to the five hour rescue odyssey of a 54-year-old Minot construction engineer. A deer called “Joe,” now is safely ensconced in a made-just-for-him enclosure at the Oliver E. (Ed) Strong home off Route 124 at Minot, was rescued from Bog Brook on the Mechanic Falls-Minot line in an epic adventure in which Strong utilized a rifle, boat, snow scooter, ropes, intestinal fortutude better known as just plain ”guts,” and in the end, good old muscle power. Although Joe now calmly eats peeled apples from the hand of his rescuer, he was a sad young animal when Strong found him Friday morning wallowing in an open channel in the middle of Bog Brook, with a dog on each shore barking loudly — eager to get at him.

The Lewiston Planning Board on Tuesday will take up amendments to the city’s zoning ordinance on canopies and awnings that would set consistent standards, distinguish between different types of canopies and awnings, and allow gas stations to modernize more easily. The amendment would specifically allow gas stations to modernize their pump islands without giving up the “grandfathered” status of the canopies over the islands.
