LEWISTON — Repairs to a Sabattus Street traffic light could tie up traffic on Old Greene Road on Wednesday morning.

City electricians will fix a short in the cables leading to the traffic signal at Old Greene Road, beginning just as morning rush hour is expected to end.

“There’s a short in one of the lines,” Electrical Superintendent Denis Caron said. “The lights are fine, but it’s the pedestrian access that is faulting out.”

All of the work will take place in the cabinet for signals, Caron said. The road won’t be touched, but the traffic signals will be disabled.

“We know exactly which conduit has the short, but we need to pull all of the cables out of conduit to find the short,” he said. “There are something like seven or eight cables in the conduit and we can’t pull just one. We have to get into the cabinet, mark every cable, disconnect it all and then see where the cable is compromised and replace it.”

Traffic on Old Greene Road and Randall Road, on either side of Sabattus Street, will be channeled into a single lane in either direction and controlled with stop signs. Traffic on Sabattus Street will flow as usual.

Caron said he did not know how long repairs would take. It could be several hours, he said.

“I don’t know how long it will take,” he said. “I hope it’s done by lunchtime, but I’m giving myself enough time to do it. It has to get done. We have to get the pedestrian signals back on.”
