ANSWER: The Gulf Coast Seafood association states that there are thousands of shrimp species. The shrimp found in the gulf of Mexico include brown, white, pink and rock shrimp. According to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, shrimp found in Maine waters include the Northern shrimp. The group Global Warming is Real states: “The sharp decline in shrimp in the region is largely attributed to over-fishing and warming ocean waters. Even if shrimp prove heat tolerant, which shouldn’t be assumed, the warming oceans of the Gulf of Maine are deadly to tiny zooplankton, the shrimp’s principal food supply. Warmer water also make the region more hospitable to predators of shrimp like dogfish and red hake.”
DEAR SUN SPOTS: In regards to the article in the paper about the horse corral on Riverside Drive in Auburn, the names of the people living there were Marcus and Georgia Spear. They had ponies and small horses. The corral was across the road from their house. Marcus worked for the Auburn Highway Department. Georgia took care of the animals. They passed away in the 1970s. — Alfred Libby in Auburn.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I lived right next door to the little mini horse corral and the owner’s name was Mr. Spear. Mr. Spear lived across the road from the corral, and I would go over and talk to him. He had riding ponies and a three-legged dog, which he told me had lost one leg in a bear trap. As a 12-year-old boy, I would sit there and listen to some great stories of the old days. He would sit there smoking his pipe and rocking in his chair. Boy, does that bring back memories.
Armand Beaudry, who was mentioned in the second article in Sun Spots, was my uncle and he lived just over the hill. My cousin Dennis Beaudry had a pony with a cart. We would stop in to visit Mr. Spear on the way to the store. Wow, that was a long time ago it seems. I would say around 1970 or 1971. — Dave in Minot.
SUN SPOTS: I am a senior citizen and live on a fixed income. I was wondering if there is a beautician in the Norway, Paris or Oxford area who gives a discount to seniors for their perms? You are such a help to a lot of people and Sun Spots is the first thing I read in the newspaper every day. — No Name, No Town.
ANSWER: There are a lot of beauticians in those three towns. Many hair salons offer senior discounts, and you only have to ask at the one you visit. If they don’t, call the next hair salon and ask.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: You’ve helped me before, thank you. I’m looking for a landline phone — any color will do. Keep up the great work. — No Name via mail.
ANSWER: Sun Spots has seen landline phones at Staples and Marden’s in Lewiston and OfficeMax, Kmart and Walmart in Auburn. These are the phones with or without cords. The phones come in many styles and colors, although black is the most abundant color.
