President Scott Knapp and athletic director Dave Gonyea have announced that Kevin Cady has been appointed head coach for the Central Maine Community College men’s hockey team that is slated to begin play next fall.
Cady spent 11 years in hockey operations with the Philadelphia Flyers and Buffalo Sabres organizations. He served as trainer for the 1978 and 1979 American Hockey League (AHL) Maine Mariners Calder Cup Champions, 1985 NHL Stanley Cup finalist Philadelphia Flyers, and the 2010 AHL Atlantic Division Champion Portland Pirates, then the top affiliate of the Sabres. He was the associate equipment manager for the 2010 AHL All-Star Classic held in Portland.
Over the course of his 750 games in professional hockey, Cady worked closely with many former NHL greats, including Hall of Famers Bernie Parent, Bob Clarke, Bill Barber, Mark Howe, and Daryl Sittler. He also served under several top NHL coaches such as Pat Quinn, Bob McCammon, and Kevin Dineen.
“We are thrilled to hire Kevin Cady as our new hockey coach. He brings with him years of experience and many contacts that will be useful in the recruiting process,” Gonyea said. “His ability to relate to today’s players and his disciplined approach to how a program should be managed lead us to believe he is the man to put CM on the hockey map.”
An off-ice official with the AHL, Cady was a regional scout for the Tier 3 Junior New Mexico Renegades of the Western States Hockey League. Certified as a level 3 hockey coach by USA Hockey, he is currently assistant varsity coach and head JV coach at Cheverus High School. He is a graduate of Cheverus and SUNY Empire State College.
“I am pleased to be offered the head coaching position at CMCC,” Cady said. “The fact that we will build a collegiate team from the ground up is appealing to me . . . The college and AD Dave Gonyea are building a first-class team.”
Cady owns and operates Cady & Associates Investigation, Inc., a full-service private investigation agency in Portland. He retired in 2010 after a 25-year career in Maine law enforcement.
The Mustangs will begin play in the 2016-17 season in the ACHA Northeast Collegiate Hockey Association. The ACHA is an organization of over 415 college and university affiliated programs. The Mustangs will play all home games at the Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn.
