A pair of local athletes attending Husson University received postseason awards from the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference for the fall season.
Matt Archer, a Chesterville native and Mt. Blue High School graduate, was one of two Husson football players named to the ECAC Division III North All-Stars Second Team. Archer, a senior left tackle, was honored along with sophomore running back.
Archer didn’t allow a sack while protecting the blindside of quarterback Joe Seccareccia and creating holes for Smith. A captain, Archer was part of an offense that set program single-season records for total offense (4,206 yards), point (374) and passing touchdowns (24).
Another tri-county local at Husson, Kayla Royer, was named an ECAC All-Star. The Greene native and Leavitt Area High School graduate earned her way onto the conference’s Division III New England Second Team in field hockey.
Royer captained an Eagles defense that allowed just four goals in North Atlantic Conference play. The senior back led the conference with three defensive saves. Royer is Husson’s all-time leader and single-season leader in defensive saves, capping her career with 12 stops overall and seven during the 2015 season.
UMF’s Smith gets second honor
For the second straight week, University of Maine-Farmington senior Meghan Smith landed on the weekly honor roll of the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
Smith earned the honor after recording her fifth double-double of the season (and fourth in five games) during the Beavers’ only game last week — a 79-38 defeat at Bowdoin. Smith scored a team-high 13 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss. The double-double was the 12th of Smith’s career.
Smith made all three of her free-throw attempts, adding to her Division III-leading total of 79 as of December 9.
Road warrior Beavers
The Beavers are on holiday break until January 5, when they open up a four-game homestand of North Atlantic Conference clashes against Thomas.
It’s a deserved break for UMF, which swept a Vermont road trip against Castleton University and Green Mountain College for the first time since 2010-11. Those two wins in two days (December 4 and 5) came just before the loss to Bowdoin in Brunswick. The Beavers spent the entire month of December on the road.
Sophomore guard Cheyenne Malloy had a career-best effort to cap off the two-game winning streak, pouring in 20 points against Green Mountain.
