DEAR SUN SPOTS: Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice is looking for volunteers. The volunteer opportunities with our agency include:

Grocery shopping and transportation to medical appointments: Patients under our Home Care Services are homebound and recovering from an illness or injury. Grocery shopping is a very important need for many of our patients who don’t have someone to do this for them.

Rides to doctor’s appointments are also an important need as these appointments are necessary for the overall success of their care. The training is four hours and offered monthly. Please call for dates and times for training.

Hospice Volunteers: Hospice volunteers help patients and families at the end of life by providing companionship, respite and vigil during the final days. Volunteers visit patients in the home setting, nursing facilities and at the Hospice House.

If you are a veteran we will match you with veteran patients. We currently have a great need for volunteers willing to visit hospice patients in the nursing facilities. This is a 20-hour training that starts Jan. 13, 2016. We will be offering an evening training starting Feb. 9.

Bereavement Volunteers: Visit one-on-one with a bereavement client and/or make bereavement reassurance calls to loved ones 6-8 weeks after the death.

Additional training is offered for those wishing to co-facilitate grief groups. The Bereavement Volunteer training will begin on Jan. 11, 2016. The training is 12 hours and 15 hours for volunteers new to Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice.

Camp Dragonfly: Help with a one-day camp for children and families and to help facilitate groups the day of the event along with assistance in set-up and other responsibilities.

The camp takes place in June each year. The overall commitment is three days and includes prep work and training. Contact us at the number below for more information. There are also some exciting children’s programs in the works.

The counties we cover include Androscoggin, Cumberland, Franklin, Kennebec, Oxford, Sagadahoc and Somerset. Most of our trainings take place in Lewiston, but once you are trained, you will be matched in your area. We need volunteers in all of these areas and we have a great need in the Augusta area because we recently expanded to cover that location.

We have several trainings scheduled and encourage anyone interested to call Kathy Baillargeon, volunteer supervisor at 207-795-9586 or email kathy.baillargeon@ahch.org.
