AUGUSTA — Brig. Gen. Gerard F. Bolduc withdrew his name Wednesday from consideration for Maine’s next adjutant general.

Bolduc thanked Gov. Paul LePage for nominating him.

“Upon further reflection, however, I withdraw my name from consideration,” Bolduc said in a prepared statement. “I am grateful for your support for the Maine National Guard and of my leadership over the past several months.”

LePage thanked Bolduc for serving as acting adjutant general for the past nine months and said a new nominee would be named in the coming months.

The adjutant general is the supreme military officer of the state and concurrently serves as commissioner of defense, veterans and emergency management.

Bolduc took over for Brig. Gen. James Campbell after he was fired by LePage over a plan to transform Maine’s 133rd Engineer Battalion into an infantry regiment.

Bolduc supported an engineer unit remaining in Maine.

Bolduc joined the Air Force and was commissioned in March 1982 through the Academy of Military Science, Knoxville, Tenn. After completion of navigator training, he was assigned to Bangor Air National Guard Base.

According to his online biography, he served in numerous operations and maintenance assignments and held squadron, group and vice wing command positions.
