SABATTUS — Town Manager Tony Ward announced Tuesday evening that Detective Sgt. Gary Baillargeon has been appointed police chief.
The announcement at the Board of Selectmen meeting also included that Spencer Teixeira of Lewiston has been hired as a patrol officer.
Both will be sworn in at the selectmen meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Town Hall.
Ward, the former police chief, said Baillargeon is a phenomenal fit.
Teixeira has served as a police officer for Fryeburg and Monmouth.
Also Tuesday, selectmen unanimously approved holding the annual town meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at the Town Hall.
They set March 1 to begin work on the 2016-17 municipal budget and April 19 for all warrant articles to be determined.
Ward said that after department heads present their requests to him, a draft budget would be given to selectmen and the Budget Committee for consideration. Several joint meetings are to be held, following by each board meeting separately to vote on their recommendations, which will be on the warrant.
There are more than 10 vacancies total on the Planning Board, the Budget Committee and the Board of Appeals, and selectmen are asking people willing to serve to contact Town Clerk Suzanne Adams and attend the next selectmen meeting. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and be residents of the town.
According to the town charter, the responsibilities of the Planning Board include evaluating and updating the town’s comprehensive plan. The Budget Committee oversees all budgets and budget amendments and makes recommendations to the Board of Selectmen. The Board of Appeals reviews decisions of the Planning Board and the code enforcement officer.

In other town news, a benefit bean supper for James Hinkley will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Oak Hill Middle School, 40 Ball Park Road. The cost is $8 per adult or $15 for two; and $5 for children ages 2 to 12.
