JAY — A public forum is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Spruce Mountain Middle School.

Community members may share their concerns about the school budget. The loss of jobs at Verso and Jay’s reduction in tax valuation, after abatements were granted to the mill, will have an added impact this year.

Superintendent Kenneth Healey said, during a meeting Tuesday night with Livermore officials, one possible cost saving measure would be to change the configuration of the district’s elementary schools. Three or four fewer teachers would be needed if one building housed Pre-K – 2nd grade students. Grades 3-5 would attend the other.

Healey said there would be minimal busing costs with the change. He wants public input on the idea. If the majority are in opposition, it will cost the district more to keep the schools as they are now.
