LEWISTON — Time Warner Cable email customers are being warned of a possible problem that may have compromised as many as 320,000 customers’ mail addresses and their respective passwords, according to a company spokeswoman.
The company announced that it was first informed by the FBI about the issue.
“Our understanding is that the compromise had nothing to do with TWC’s systems or processes, and we have found no evidence of a breach in our systems that operate and secure email accounts for our customers,” company spokeswoman Nathalie Burgos told the Sun Journal on Thursday.
“TWC is proactively reaching out to those customers who could potentially be impacted so they can take precautionary measures to protect their accounts by changing their password using a strong, unique alternative,” Burgos wrote in an email.
Time Warner customers with Roadrunner service who have email addresses ending in @rr.com were of “particular concern,” according to the Auburn Police Department’s Facebook page.
Those customers will be contacted by the company with information regarding how to reset their passwords, the police Facebook page said.
“If you have used the same password to access other accounts or to transact banking business via the internet, PLEASE CHANGE THOSE PASSWORDS IMMEDIATELY!!” the Facebook post stated.
