SANFORD — Ethan Belanger hit 16 of his 46 points from the foul line and Brad Bouchard scored 14 as Sanford stunned Oxford Hills 79-65 in a boys’ basketball game Thursday night.
The Spartans (3-6) built a shaky 27-26 lead before erupting with 52 points in the in the second half. Frank Veino added 11 points for Sanford.
Andrew Fleming broke the school’s all-time scoring record with his 30 points and brother Matt Flemming added 22, including nailing down four 3-pointers for Oxford Hills (7-2).
Carrabec 68, Wiscasset 63
NORTH ANSON — Dustin Crawford threw in the game-high 20 points and Carrabec erupted with 32 points in the third quarter as the Cobras (3-7) beat Wiscasset 68-63 in a boys’ basketball game Thursday.
Cade Chipman threw 11 points, Evan Holzworth scored 15 and Dustin Crawford added 10 for Carrabec.
ForWiscasset (8-3), Ethan James scored 19 points and Brandon Sprague threw in 18, including four 3-pointers.
Girls’ basketball
Monmouth 59, Winthrop 17
WINTHROP — After quickly building a 23-point advantage in the first quarter, Monmouth slowly eased off the gas before cruising to a 59-17 romp over Winthrop in a MVC girls’ basketball tilt Thursday.
Tia Day and Julia Johnson led the mighty Mustangs (9-1) with 12 points apiece, while Hannah Anderson chipped in with seven.
Matti Rice and Shie Smith paced the struggling Ramblers (0-10) with four points each, while Brie McClure added three.
Cape Elizabeth 46, Poland 37
POLAND — Cape Elizabeth used a 17-4 third quarter run to pull away for a 46-37 victory over Poland Thursday.
Mattie Bow led the Capers (3-6) with 20 points, including a pair of shots from beyond the arc. Montana Braxton chipped in with eight points in a solid effort.
The Knights (3-6) were paced by Nathalie Theriault with nine points, while Jessica Seeley added seven.
Boothbay 36, Dirigo 30
BOOTHBAY HARBOR— Despite a strong rally in the third quarter, Boothbay managed to hang on for a 36-30 victory over Dirigo in a mid-season girls’ basketball tilt Thursday evening.
Page Brown led the undefeated Seahawks (11-0) with 13 points, while Faith Blethen chipped in with 11.
The Cougars (6-4) were paced by Sabrina Daoud with a fine 11-point effort, while Lauren Henderson tallied nine and Kaicey Conant added six.
Carrabec 41, Wiscasset 25
NORTH ANSON — Libby Chestnut poured 23 points into the net Thursday to propel Carrabec to a 41-25 romp over Wiscasset in more mid-season girls’ basketball action.
The Cobras built a 17-9 advantage in the first half and were never challenged.
The Wolverines were paced by Gabby Chapman with 11 points, while Hayhlee Craig tallied six and Grace Webber added four.
