ANSWER: Sun Spots checked with the Maine Turnpike Authority and learned this about the roadside clearing from mile 63 to 75.3: “This project will include the removal of trees, brush and debris from the roadside, northbound and southbound, beginning at Mile 63 and ending at Mile 75.3 of the Maine Turnpike. Vegetation will be removed to a distance of roughly 100 feet from the edge of pavement on both bounds.

“The goals of the project are to improve overall roadway safety by removing large trees from the clear zone; reduce shading of the roadway to aid in snow and ice removal operations; and to increase driver reaction times when confronting wildlife crossing the roadway.”

DEAR SUN SPOTS: We read Sun Spots every day and enjoy it very much. We need to hire someone to remove snow from our driveway. We have our own snowblower. There are lots of people who do snow plowing, but that wouldn’t work for us. Our telephone number is 207-946-4961. Thank you for your help.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: You’ve helped me before and I’m hoping you can help me again. We’re going to be moving soon, and there are some things we need to dispose of that include a dresser, TV stand, microwave oven cart, and a few other things. Would you know where I can dispose of items like this and how much it will cost? We live in Lewiston. Thank you for your help. — No Name.

ANSWER: There is a Transfer site at 424 River Road in Lewiston for that city’s residents. The City sells ePasses (formerly known as “Punch Passes”) at the Treasurer’s Office and at the Scale House at the Solid Waste Facility. In the past, the City would issue an actual “pass” to the purchaser, which would be marked or “punched” each time waste was disposed at the City’s Solid Waste Facility.

The new ePass uses information contained on the purchaser’s driver’s license. When the purchaser of the pass (or member of that household) brings household waste to the Solid Waste Facility, they will be asked for their driver’s license. After they have finished dumping, the material disposed will be recorded on the City’s computer system and a receipt showing the waste items disposed will be issued.

As in the past, if the number of waste items on the holder’s ePass has been exceeded, they will be required to pay for any overage at that time (the Facility accepts cash, checks and credit cards). The cost of the first ePass is still $20 and is good for one year from the date of purchase. If needed, a second pass can be purchased for $40.  Call 207-513-3006 if you have any questions.

Have you considered donating these items to a charity such as the Goodwill in Auburn or Salvation Army in Lewiston? Also, you could try Safe Voices in Lewiston at 207-782-1785 or Hope Haven Gospel Mission in Lewiston at 207-783-6086.
