LEWISTON — Maine Immigrant & Refugee Services Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the gymnasium of Longley Elementary School at 145 Birch St. Boys’ soccer from 10 to 11:25 a.m., girls’ track from 11:30 am. to noon, followed by MLK Day Celebration from noon to 5 p.m. Offerings include artwork, poems by local youth, “I have a dream” video clips and posters, children’s activities, volunteer and community services opportunities, sewing by local parents and volunteers and conversational English with community members.
TUESDAY, Jan. 19
AUBURN— Auburn Sewer District trustee meeting, 4 p.m. in the Auburn Public Library, with a public hearing at 5:30 pm. to discuss a proposed sewer rate increase.
LEWISTON — City Council workshop and regular meeting in the Council Chamber on the bottom floor of City Hall. The workshop meeting begins at 6 p.m. An executive session is set to discuss purchasing property. The regular meeting follows at 7 p.m. and topics include banning hoverboards in city buildings, membership on city committees, special use permits and supporting a rail coalition.
WEDNESDAY, Jan. 20
AUBURN— Water District trustees regular meeting, 4 p.m. in the district offices, 268 Court St.
AUBURN — School Committee regular meeting, 7 p.m., Council Chamber, Auburn Hall. Agenda: teacher Erin Towns will talk about an upcoming student trip to Washington, D.C.; updates on teacher performance evaluation program and proficiency-based diploma.
LEWISTON — Talk with a U.S. immigration officer from the Department of Homeland Security, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Lewiston Public Library. Free open one-on-one sessions for individuals with questions about the immigration process and general information about naturalization, citizenship, permanent residence and asylum.
THURSDAY, Jan. 21
LEWISTON — Great Falls Forum, “A Week in the Life of a Maine Attorney General” by Attorney General Janet Mills, noon, Callahan Hall in Lewiston Public Library. Public welcome, free, bring bag lunch.
AUBURN — Auburn citizen participation series, Neighborhood Conversations, for residents to learn about Auburn educational initiatives, 6 p.m. at Edward Little High School’s band room, for neighborhoods of Park Avenue and Washburn elementary schools and Edward Little High School.
AUBURN — Book discussion of “House of Stone: A Memoir of Home, Family and a Lost Middle East.” A series on Islamic culture through fiction, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Auburn Public Library, facilitated by Reza Jalali of the University of Southern Maine.
