MONMOUTH — Local businesses, individuals and organizations are pulling together to fight cabin fever at the third Monmouth Chili Chowder Challenge from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Monmouth Fish and Game, 347 Route 202.
The event features awards for Best Chili, Best Chowder and Kickin’ Cornbread. Suggested donation is $5 per person and $20 for families up to six members.
Proceeds will support the Monmouth Families Helping Families Monmouth Food and Fuel Assistance program started by Nancy Ludewig and Darlene Sanborn to help Monmouth families during winter months and throughout the year.
This year the program is being extended to include nonprofits that help with food for families in need.
Those wishing to enter the contest should contact Sanborn at 207-933-2557 or 207-446-6552 to register before Jan. 22. There is no fee to enter.
There will be two awards this year: People’s Choice and Judge’s Award for Best Chili, Best Chowder and Best Cornbread.
The challenge will include family recipes from businesses, community organizations and individuals, including the Monmouth Fire Department, the Monmouth Police Department, Norton/Davis Insurance, Monmouth Museum, Friends of Cumston Library, Monmouth Lions, TJ’s Place, Women’s Fire Auxiliary, the Town Office, the Transfer Station and others.
This year’s challenge supports Cottrell/Taylor Christmas Baskets 2016, which provided for 68 families this past Christmas. Donations may also be made to the town fuel assistance fund.
A raffle will be held on a “Pastel Tumbler” quilt on display at Apple Valley Bakery on Main Street. All proceeds support the Monmouth Weekend Backpack Program. Tickets cost $3 for one or two for $5. The drawing will be held March 9.
