DURHAM — Maine State Police on Tuesday were investigating the discovery of a man’s body in the parking lot of a recreational area at Runaround Pond, according to a statement from Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The pond is along a road by the same name, just off Route 9.
According to McCausland, the body appeared to be that of a middle-aged man and no vehicle was found nearby.
The man was not dressed for the weather, according to state police Sgt. Mark Holmquist. There was ice-fishing equipment found on the pond not far from the body, but police had not determined whether it belonged to the deceased man, Holmquist said.
The body was found by a man using the portable restroom at the parking lot on Tuesday morning. He called 911 and medical units arrived before police. Holmquist said state police arrived at the scene at about 9 a.m.
Asked whether there were any signs of trauma to the body, Holmquist declined to comment.
He said it’s possible the body was dropped off at the parking lot postmortem.
The State Medical Examiner’s Office took the body to Augusta for autopsy and identification. A spokeswoman at that office said late Tuesday afternoon an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.
No wallet was found on the body.
State police are checking for reports of missing persons in the area.
