WILTON — Residents must post a Transfer Station permit on their vehicle by March 1 or they will not be allowed to dump waste, Town Manager Rhonda Irish told the Board of Selectpersons Tuesday.

Permits are available at the Town Office.

Irish also reminded residents that sand for home use is not available at the town garage. Up to four five-gallon pails per day may be taken from town sand piles located at the Town Office or at the Transfer Station, she said.

She also reminded that the sand is intended for private use only and not for people who do commercial snowplowing and sanding.

In other business, the board discussed the need for a code enforcement officer. Roger Williams is available for Wilton one day a week, but he plans to retire in June.

The town contracted with Turner for Williams’ part-time services, Irish said.

Sharing a full-time code enforcement officer with Turner is being considered, she said. Wilton does not need a full-time code enforcement officer, but one day a week is not enough, she said.

The board inquired about creating a full-time position with the person splitting their time equally between code enforcement officer and other services for the town.

In previous advertising for the position, the town did not find a lot of people going into code enforcement, she said. The position requires certification by the state, along with knowledge of building construction, shoreland zoning and codes.

The new property assessments are nearly finished, Irish announced. The assessor will meet with the board before any notices are sent to residents, she said.

Residents with dogs must register them by Jan. 29 for face a $25 late fee.

The board appointed Ruth Cushman to the Finance Committee.
