JAY — Selectpersons voted Monday to accept, with regret, the resignation of Selectperson Stephen “Steve” McCourt, effective April 26.

He is resigning because of other commitments he has and he is not able to focus as much attention as he would like on the position, according to Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere.

McCourt was elected to the board in April 2006, and has served as chairman several times. McCourt was elected in April 2015 to serve another three-year term.

His resignation is effective the same day as the annual municipal town meeting referendum and the Regional School Unit 73 budget validation vote will be held.

The board also voted to hold an election for his replacement this year.

Nomination papers for the remaining two years of the term will be available Monday, Feb. 1, Town Clerk Ronda Palmer said Monday. Papers are due at the Town Office by March 14.

Other nomination papers available for Feb. 1 are a three-year of selectperson, the seat held by board Chairman Justin Merrill.

The Regional School Unit 73 board has three seats up for election. The three-year terms of Shari Ouellette and Michael Schaedler are up this year. A one-year seat, held by Doug DiPasquale, is also up for election. Selectpersons appointed him in September to fill Tamara Hoke’s position until the 2016 election. Hoke resigned in August.
