MEXICO – The Police Department charged three men with recent thefts at local businesses, Police Chief Roy Hodsdon said Wednesday morning.

Robert Chadwick, 51, and Keith Provencher, 33, both of Rumford, are accused of breaking into Maine Smoke Shop at 137 Main St. on Jan. 15 and stealing about $280 worth of cigarettes, Hodsdon said.

Two days later, the two men and Luis Rivera, 31, a transient, broke into Dick’s Restaurant at 54 Main St. and stole cash, the chief said.

“We also connected Provencher with stealing from the Mexico Wal-Mart,” Hodsdon said. “With those arrests, we were able to close out four cases of theft and  burglary that we’ve had since Jan. 17.”

Chadwick is charged with one count of theft and one count of burglary and is on probation from previous convictions, according to the chief.

Provencher is charged with one count of burglary, two counts of theft and one count of criminal mischief, Hodsdon said, and was released from the Police Department on $3,000 unsecured bail.
