NEW GLOUCESTER — An unknown number of animals died Monday afternoon in a mobile home fire at 36 Moose Ridge Road, Fire Department Capt. Scott Doyle said in a news release.

No humans were injured, he said.

The identity of the homeowner was not available Monday night and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Doyle said.

The blaze was reported at 3:54 p.m. on Moose Ridge Road, a private road off Snow Hill Road. The first crew on scene found heavy fire coming from the windows, Doyle said. The fire, mostly in the kitchen, was knocked down within 10 minutes.

He said both department engines made multiple attempts to get up the steep, snow-covered drive. A fire engine from another town got stuck across the driveway, prohibiting other apparatus from getting to the site, he said. Crews pumped water 800 feet up the hill from Snow Hill Road. It took 3,000 gallons to extinguish the flames.

New Gloucester was assisted by Gray, Poland, Pownal and Raymond fire departments.
