AUGUSTA — The girls’ basketball team from Boothbay used its defensive game to stymie Carrabec 32-17 in Monday’s Class C South quarterfinal.
The Seahawks averaged just 25 points per game against this season. After an early exit last year, Boothbay made sure history didn’t repeat. The Seahawks jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the first quarter and were up 17-6 at the half.
Freshman Faith Blethen led all scorers with 16 points. Kate Friant added six while Hannah Morley added five. Page Brown, the team’s top scorer and the leading scorer in the MVC, had just two points.
Carrabec got five points each from Liberty Chestnut and Mackayla Willette.
Boothbay (18-1) advances to Thursday’s semifinal to play No. 3 Monmouth. The Mustangs were the lone team to beat the Seahawks during the regular season.
The Seahawks built the 9-2 lead in the first quarter with four points from Blethen. Chestnut had the only points for Carrabec. Blethen had six of her team’s eight points in the second quarter to build the 17-6 lead.
Carrabec stayed close and was within 23-14 after three quarters. The Cobras couldn’t make a final push to rally. Boothbay scored all of its points in the final quarter from the foul line. Morley had all her points on five free throws in the fourth. Friant sank three from the line as well.
Vinalhaven 39, Pine Tree 24
AUGUSTA — Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes scored all of her game-high 21 points in the second half Monday to lead Vinalhaven School to a 39-24 win over Pine Tree in Class D South quarterfinal action.
The Vikings defeated the Breakers last year in the first round, as well.
Vinalhaven led just 13-12 at the half, but Davis-Oakes scored all but one of her team’s points in the third quarter and scored nine more in the fourth as the Vikings extended the lead. She also finished with 14 rebounds.
Paige Dennison added seven for the Vikings. Pine Tree was led by Alex Goodman with 18. She scored all 11 of her team’s points in the second half.
Pine Tree did a nice job defensively on Davis-Oakes in the first half. Goodman shadowed her while the Breakers zone gave the Vikings trouble. Deja Doughty and Ashlyn Littlefield each had four points in the first half and Dennison hit a 3 to pace the offense and give the Vikings the narrow lead at the break. Goodman had six of her teams’ 12 points at the half. Adriana DePalma had four points in the second quarter.
Vinalhaven missed its first 11 shots in the second and finished the quarter 1-for-12 and 4-for-20 for the half.
In the third, David-Oakes scored on a couple of transition plays and the Vikings were able to find space in the Breakers defense. Davis-Oakes scored 14 points to build a 26-20 lead after three. In the fourth, Pine Tree missed its first six shots and the Vikings opened up the lead. Goodman tried to keep the Breakers close but managed just four points for Pine Tree in the final quarter.
Vinalhaven advances to Thursday’s semifinal to play Valley, which upset second-ranked Forest Hills on Saturday.
