ANSWER: Bonnie Dwyer, aka The Quilt Whisperer, is a member of the Professional Association of Appraisers – Quilted Textiles, and a passionate expert on all things quilt-related. Dwyer lives in Manchester and travels across the country to share her knowledge (and her collection) with other quilters. You can reach her by calling (207) 622-6202 or (207) 446-7311, or you can email her at bonnie@bonniedwyer.com. She comes highly recommended by local quilt shops, including Oxford Mill-End Store on Route 26 in Oxford and Quiltessentials, Inc. on Minot Avenue in Auburn.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have a $50 gift certificate to Craft Mania. I know they are now closed, but am wondering if they have stored leftover inventory somewhere that people can still purchase to use up their certificates. Call 784-9586 with any information. — Rita, Lewiston.

ANSWER: Unfortunately, Craft Mania was an independently-owned craft store, so there are no other locations where you might be able to use your gift card since the Auburn store closed its doors this past fall. As far as leftover inventory, Sun Spots was unable to reach the store’s former owners, so maybe a reader has information they can share with us.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Could you explain why the weather forecast in the Sun Journal has specific temperatures at the top of the page and then gives a range of temperatures below on the left? If they are going to give a range of temperatures, why the exact number on the top? — C.M., Greene.

ANSWER: The Sun Journal’s weather, courtesy of Charlie Lopresti at WGME 13, offers a range of temperatures at the top of the weather block listing Lewiston-Auburn’s high temperature on the left and the low temperature on the right under each corresponding day. In the weather map below, high temperatures for various locations in the state are listed with the corresponding towns or cities, making the forecast more local within the large readership area of the Sun Journal. Maine is a big state with a variety of terrains and elevations. Temperatures can change dramatically from one place to another.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I want to share a heartwarming story. I got stuck (really good) while exiting my driveway after a snowstorm. Within three minutes, two cars had stopped with a total of three people who didn’t hesitate to start shoveling and pushing. Along came a truck with a plow and he also stopped and, with the group effort, they were successful in getting me out. It’s time to look for the good in people because they are out there and I am very thankful. — Cheryl, Auburn

ANSWER: Thank you for sharing your story. It’s always nice to hear of people helping others. Sun Spots encourages you to find your own way to pay the kindness forward.
