1923 – 2016

FARMINGTON — Birdena Durrell Hardy, 92, of Farmington died peacefully on Friday, Feb. 26, in Farmington.

Birdena was born on Aug. 10, 1923, a daughter of Clyde E. and Elsie A. (Pinkham) Durrell of Strong.

She graduated from Strong High School in the Class of 1942 and married Harold C. Hardy of Farmington in 1946. She resided on the farm on Weeks Mills Road until her death.

She enjoyed reading, cooking on the wood stove, and spending time with her dog Buffy, for many years. Her family and the farm were her life’s work. She was a 4-H leader for 10 years.

Birdena leaves behind her five children, Peggy Hawes and her husband, Lincoln, of Union, Suzanne (Susie) Caverly and her husband, Frank, of Clinton, Howard Hardy of Oakland, Jill Bates and her husband, Randall, of New Vineyard, and Henry Hardy and his wife, Teresa, of Farmington; grandchildren, Neal Caverly and his wife, Lindsey, of Clinton, Andrew Hardy and his wife, Ashley, of Farmington, Marjorie Hardy and her fiancé Ryan Rida, of Cummington, Mass., Ashlie Hardy of Farmington and her significant other, Thomas Kuipers, of Ontario, Wayne Drake and his wife, Stacie, of Auburn, Nathan Bates and his wife, Kimi, of Okinawa, Japan, and Allison Bates of New Vineyard; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-stepgrandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Hardy; and a grandson, Dale Caverly.
