PORTLAND — Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says he can win in Maine “if there’s a large turnout.”
Sanders rallied a capacity crowd at Portland’s State Theater on Wednesday, telling supporters that pundits once thought of him as a “fringe” candidate and Hillary Clinton as the “inevitable nominee.” He told supporters, “Guess what? She’s not so inevitable today.”
Sanders won his home state of Vermont, along with Colorado, Oklahoma and Minnesota, in Super Tuesday voting.
The Vermont senator has a strong following in Maine.
On Tuesday, there were so many people at the theater that several hundred people had to watch on TV monitors in an overflow space.
Maine’s Democratic caucus will take place in more than 400 towns on Sunday, a day after the state’s Republicans will hold their caucuses.
