FARMINGTON — Lexi Daggett of New Vineyard and Brooklynn Winters of Farmington both want students to have a voice at the school board.
The two Mt. Blue High School juniors were welcomed by Regional School Unit 9 directors Tuesday night at Mt. Blue Campus. The school board changed the policy in March to allow four student representatives on the board in the next school year.
“I think it is really important for students to have a voice in their own education,” Winters said.
Daggett agreed. Initially unsure she would be selected, she took a shot at it.
“I know a lot of people. I thought it was important for students to have a voice,” Daggett said.
The two students applied for the positions and were interviewed by high school Principal Bruce Mochamer, Superintendent Tom Ward, Assistant Superintendent Leanne Condon, and a school board director.
Both girls also work part-time jobs.
Daggett is a member of the National Honor Society and plays soccer and softball.
Winters is an officer for Interact, which is the high school branch of the Rotary International Club, she said. She is on the cross-country team and a student of Upward Bound. She is also a member of the school leadership team and on the math team, she said. Art is her complete passion and she often does commission work for extra money on the side, she said.
The girls both take academics very seriously.
