JAY — Police charged a local man Wednesday with supplying a mix of heroin and fentanyl to man who overdosed on it in February, Detective Michael Mejia said Thursday.
Cameron Rose, 20, of Jay was arrested on a warrant charging felony aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, he said. A conviction carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Police responded to Apple Lane at about 4:30 a.m. Feb. 15 and found a man unresponsive and blue in a vehicle in a driveway, Mejia said. It was well below freezing and he had been in the car since 8:30 p.m. Feb. 14.
NorthStar EMS ambulance personnel were able to revive him with Narcan, an opiate antidote, Mejia said, and took him to a hospital where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
Initially, the overdose was thought to be caused by heroin but in preliminary test results, it showed a mix of heroin and fentanyl, Mejia said.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, fentanyl is a powerful, synthetic opioid analgesic that’s more potent than morphine. Mixing fentanyl with street-sold heroin or cocaine markedly amplifies their potency and potential dangers. Effects include euphoria, drowsiness/respiratory depression and arrest, nausea, confusion and unconsciousness.
Rose was taken to the Franklin County jail in Farmington and was released Thursday after posting $10,000 cash bail, according to a corrections officer.
