FARMINGTON — The Livermore road foreman is facing a drunken-driving charge, after police stopped him on Main Street Friday night, according to a police official.

Officer Michael Lyman noticed a tail light out and some poor operation on a vehicle going south on Main Street near Cumberland Farms at about 9:20 p.m., according to Lyman’s police report, police secretary Bonnie Pomeroy said Monday.

Lyman interviewed the driver, Gerald Whitney, 60, of Wilton, and asked him to do an Intoxilyzer breath test. Whitney was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of operating under the influence, according to police.

If convicted, the minimum mandatory punishment for a first-time offense of operating under the influence is a $500 fine and a 150-day license suspension, unless there are aggravating factors, according to state statute.

Whitney was released from the Franklin County jail on $3,000 unsecured bail on Saturday. He is scheduled to appear in a Farmington court on April 26.

Whitney declined comment Monday.

Livermore interim Administrator Assistant Amy Byron said early Monday afternoon that as of now, Whitney is employed with the town.

She said she spoke to board Chairman Peter Castonguay and had a call in to the Maine Municipal Association legal department.

The board planned to hold an executive session Monday night at the end of its meeting at Livermore Elementary School, Byron said.

Whitney was hired as road foreman on Nov. 16. He was one of five applicants for the position.
