WILTON — Flames damaged the outside wall of a home at 44 Black Road on Tuesday afternoon, and the owner burned his hand while trying to put out the blaze.
Michael Dalot and his dog, Sasha, rested as firefighters tore the siding from the back of his older mobile home.
“I saw smoke out the back window,” Dalot said. “I burned my hand trying to put it out with snow.”
Dalot said he got his dog out of the home and called for help.
The fire started at about 1:20 p.m. when creosote leaked from the elbow of a stovepipe onto leaves, igniting them and spreading underneath and up the outside wall of the home, Wilton Fire Chief Sonny Dunham said. Ductwork for the oil furnace and some electrical wire melted, he said.
“It was caught quick,” Dunham said.
Dalot was treated at the scene by NorthStar emergency personnel, Dunham said.
Dalot was expected to be able to remain in the home, which is not insured, Dunham said. He estimated damage at around $2,000.
Wilton Fire Department received help from Farmington, Jay and East Dixfield fire departments.
