NEWRY — Sunday River Ski Resort is one of six in North America nominated for an award recognizing its snow-making capabilities.
The award is sponsored by HKD Snowmakers, which provides Sunday River with much of its snow-making equipment.
Kathryn Castaldo, communications coordinator for Sunday River, said the nominees for the HKD I AM A Snowmaker Award are recognized for having the best snow-making crews in the country. They demonstrate exceptional snow-making capabilities, ranging from on-hill equipment to experience, she said.
“The award aims to highlight the underdogs of the industry, and to showcase the camaraderie of each resort’s snow-making department,” Castaldo said.
Each snow-making crew was asked to submit a trailer and use videos to highlight their members. Sunday River’s crew said it has 20 snow-makers who alternate between two 12-hour shifts, and its SR-7 snow-maker has made their work easier over the years.
“The winner is decided by an online vote,” Castaldo said. Voting is open through March 31 and can be done at: saminfo.com/i-am-a-snowmaker-2016.
Other ski resorts nominated include Stowe and Okemo Mountains in Vermont, Cataloochee Ski Area in North Carolina, Copper Mountain in Colorado, and Whistler Blackcomb of British Columbia, Canada.
