ORONO — The University of Maine is among several universities across the country that has received anti-Semitic fliers sent to their network-connected printers and fax machines.

The Portland Press Herald reports UMaine officials posted an alert on the Orono school’s website explaining that the racist fliers were sent to campus printers last week, including two that were sent out from printers in the student union on Friday.

Anti-Defamation League representatives say it appears that a neo-Nazi group hacked into schools’ information systems. Officials say this kind of cyber-attack may be a new tactic utilized by hate groups.

The fliers, which specifically targeted Jewish people and included links to a neo-Nazi website, began popping up at schools last Thursday.

Campus police and technology officials are investigating.
