LEWISTON — A recent private celebration after Lewiston High School’s hockey team won the state championship has resulted in disciplinary action against a number of individuals, Superintendent Bill Webster said Tuesday.
The Sun Journal was told by multiple sources that after the team won the state title March 5, players were suspended for consuming alcohol and smoking marijuana outside the home of a School Department employee.
Head hockey coach Jamie Belleau had no comment Tuesday. The party was not outside his home.
Webster said the matter was investigated and action taken.
“We have fully investigated this incident, and discipline has been administered in accordance with policy,” Webster said. “While I cannot go into details, I do want to communicate that our investigation determined that the alcohol and marijuana use was outside the house, and not known by the employee when it was happening. This does not excuse that it took place.”
Webster called it “a very disappointing situation. We will be doing a review of applicable policies in the near future.”
The Sun Journal asked Webster about the current status of a particular assistant coach, based on information received by the newspaper, and Webster said, “Hockey season is over. We typically bring next year’s coaches to the School Committee in May of each year.”
