AUGUSTA — Lorenzo M. Vargas, 53, of Dixfield died on Tuesday, March 29, at the Veterans’ Administration Medical Regional Hospice at Togus following a battle with heart failure.
He was born in Weehawken, N.J., on Nov. 3, 1962, the son of Mary Claire (Collins) Vargas and Lorenzo M. Vargas Alfaro, both deceased.
Lorenzo graduated from Hoboken High School in 1980 and was an outstanding athlete in several sports, especially football. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy (1980-1983), graduated with honors from engineman school, and was stationed aboard the USS Fulton, New London, Conn.
He was a musician, songwriter and “foot model.” His family and friends loved his passion for the guitar, singing karaoke and playing “open mics” with his friends. He was a versatile, self-taught musician playing keyboards, harmonica and his beloved guitars. He traveled extensively throughout the state to skillfully and passionately perform original and covered songs. He will be long remembered as a great listener, with a compassionate heart and deep concern for his fellow man. A peacemaker since birth, he requests that each of us reach out to someone without expectation of their response, especially if this action could repair relationships or result in forgiveness.
He is survived by a sister, Lisa Picard and family of Farmington; two brothers, John Vargas and family of Dixfield and Hugo Vargas and family of Thousand Oaks, Calif. Uncle Renz was cherished by nine nieces, a nephew, several aunts, uncles, cousins, members of his 12-step family and countless friends. He also leaves behind the love of his life, Bertha Veilleux and her family.
His fun-loving nature, gentle wisdom and simple approach to living will be missed by all.
