NEW GLOUCESTER — Selectmen on Monday dedicated the 220th annual town report to William “Bill” Kiley for “his exceptional record of service to the community.”

Kiley, born in 1936 on Peacock Hill Road, lives there with his wife of 57 years, Patricia. They are the parents of two adult children, Debra and John.

A charter member of the Lunn-Hunnewell AMVET Post 6, Kiley served as commander and first, second and third vice commander.

He began serving with New Gloucester Fire and Rescue in high school and continued for 50 years. He is a founding member of the Royal River Riders Snowmobile Club, which was organized in 1964 and maintains 23 miles of trails in town.

He is a 30-year member of the Cumberland Masonic Lodge and served as a selectman from 1973 to 1975.

Kiley helped to start the New Gloucester Santa program in 1966.

His daughter, Debra said, “Honoring those that have served has been hugely important to my dad.”

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1954 and served as a petty officer aboard the USS Caberra, a Boston-class cruiser operating out of Norfolk, Va., at the end of the Korean War.
