AUGUSTA — The Maine Senate has adopted a resolution that reaffirms “In God We Trust” as the official motto of the United States.

The Senate adopted the resolution on Thursday. The resolution supports the display of the motto in homes, houses of worship, public buildings, public schools and other government institutions.

The resolution states that all individuals have a right to “worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences.” It also says that the sentiment of “In God We Trust” has been an integral part of the country since its founding.

Sen. David Burns, a Republican from Whiting, proposed the resolution.
