FARMINGTON — The Franklin County sheriff is looking for at least 10 people to participate in a driver awareness program for mature drivers.
“It’s no secret that as we age, we tend to slow down, which also affects our reactions while driving,” Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said in a news release.
The Keeping Your Keys program will allow drivers an opportunity to test their personal abilities to see if their reaction time has declined over time.
The class will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Regional School Unit 9/Franklin County Adult Education Center at Mt. Blue Campus, at the high school at 129 Seamon Road in Farmington.
The class involves an hour of classroom discussion, driving on a simulator and testing driving skills in the parking lot with the sheriff as the participant’s passenger.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, American Automobile Association and Franklin County Adult Education, is offering the class.
If interested, contact the Sheriff’s Office at 778-2680. If 10 participants are not signed up by the end of the month, the class will be canceled, Nichols said.
Completion of the course may reduce participants’ vehicle insurance as well as inform participants of what their personal abilities are, according to the news release.
This is a no-stress course, designed only for participants’ personal information. No one will come to take a participant’s license should they fare badly, Nichols said.
